Design Brief: Take Inspiration from a designer or decade and create a garment based on the inspiration gathered.
The Fires Raging Evening Gown
To design this project, I drew inspiration from 1940s evening gowns and gowns designed by Madeline Vionnet. Since I am trying to expand my skills, I wanted to try my hand at creating a longer dress, so I made a floor-length red velvet gown. The hem of the dress was hand-sewn with a blind hem technique, the back closure was complete with 23 hand-sewn silk-covered buttons, and at the front of the gown is a rhinestone-embellished button. This project was one of my most challenging garments due to the nature of velvet and how it behaves when sewn together. However, through trial and error, I learned more skills and created a one-of-a-kind gown!
